Question

Does a RAID storage system need to be turned off before replacing a failed drive?

Answer

Not in most cases. The vast majority of contemporary RAID systems provide for ‘hot swapping’ failed drives. Typically, once a drive has been replaced, the data reconstruction or rebuilding operation will start automatically.
